I’ve been extra nocturnal lately so I actually thought about staying up to watch the Oscar nominations live at 7 something in the morning. Instead I made better choices and stayed up reading until 4 and slept til noon, and then backread twitter in bed to gather impressions on the nominees instead of looking up the actual list. I don’t have a lot to say about the nominees, there’s nothing particularly surprising. The diverse slate of acting nominees is exciting, and having two women in contention for best director is a long over due first. Chloe Zhao isn’t just the first woman of color nominated for best director, she’s also the front runner, and I’m rooting for her real hard. I wish there had been more love for Spike Lee’s Da Five Bloods, which I haven’t stopped thinking about since I saw it over the summer. Also, I can’t believe that Glen Close might actually win an Oscar for Hillbilly Elegy. I haven’t seen it yet, and don’t know if I will before the ceremony, but god. We don’t have to do this.

WHAT I WATCHED YESTERDAY
Had a very fun time with George Lucas Talk Show last night, as usual. Great sequence where they started making music and after show guest Charlyne Yi kept on walking into different rooms in her apartment and pulling out new musical instruments. Next week is “Oops All Bumpers,” and I could not be more excited.
SONG OF THE DAY
I haven’t really been following Dessa’s Ides project, where she releases a new song on the 15th of every much, but this is THE Ides of March, so I thought it’d be a good time to check back in. She’s never bad.
Grateful to be reading this for almost a year! Good project!!! Silver lining to these pandemdays!
