Too many times in the past year I’ve sat down to write the newsletter and had to decide if I should attempt to wrestle with the latest tragedy or just do my usual little bullshit. I am just so tired.
Here is a document collecting various Asian American orgs to donate to/support. The intervention training I was going to link to is at capacity right now, but you’re smart, you can google, there are resources out there.

WHAT I WATCHED YESTERDAY
It was a lazy movie watching day. We threw on Onward, Pixar’s early 2020 D&D adventure that got lost in the chaos. It got pretty ambivalent reviews, and it never really wows, but I had a good time. It never does the big emotionally manipulative Time to Cry thing that’s so much of Pixar’s formula, and I’m not sure if it was trying but failed, or if it purposely decided to be more low key, but I appreciated it. Pixar’s other 2020 movie, Soul, is unquestionably a more impressive film, but I also found it exhausting. Onward doesn’t try to be About Things to the same degree. There are themes about family, and holding onto tradition, but it’s too silly and insubstantial for the metaphor to really land. Onward isn’t another Pixar classic, but it’s a nice afternoon.
Then I threw on Midnight Run, the Robert De Niro/Charles Grodin accidental rom-com. I think about this movie all the time, and it’s on hbomax right now, and director Martin Brest is in Blank Check’s March Madness bracket, and then wonderful supporting actor Yaphet Kotto just died, and I had to give it a rewatch. It’s such a good movie, not mindless but very easy going. I wasn’t paying full attention, but I had a great time. Sometimes you just want to watch actors with fun chemistry have a road trip adventure.
Remember what I said about how I love Batman, and how I think more movies should have Batman? Well, that’s true, and I rewatched Tim Burton’s Batman last night, and it’s so great. It looks so cool, and it’s so goofy, and everyone is just perfect in it. A great time! And all the Prince songs are just unbelievable.
SONG OF THE DAY
Nobody’s cooler than Prince. This is the dorkiest thing he ever did, and it’s still 1000 times cooler than I will ever be.
Thanks for the resources.
